“Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate." - Mark 10:9

Dear Soon-to-Be-Marrieds!!

Congratulations on your engagement and all the hope and excitement that is before you. A few things you should know before you get married at the Cathedral:

Marriage Preparation vs. Wedding Preparation

There is a saying, “A wedding is a day; a marriage is a lifetime.” In other words, the wedding is the ceremony that initiates your marriage, which is your lifetime commitment to each other. The Church provides marriage preparation classes out of its desire to give you the best start at your new vocation as a sacramentally joined couple.

Living your Faith

If you are asking to be married in the church, please understand that you are asking to make a statement of faith before God and his people. To be married in the Catholic Church, means that at least one of you is Catholic. More specifically, it means that one or both of you who are Catholic are faithfully living out your Catholic faith.* The Catholic party/ies should have received the Sacrament of Confirmation prior to marriage, if possible. Please let your assigned clergy know if you are NOT Confirmed.

*You don’t both have to be Catholic to be married in the Catholic Church. However, one of you must be a baptized Catholic.

Is at least one of you a participating member of St. John’s Cathedral parish? If you live out of town or are off at school, does a member of your family belong to the parish? Were your parents or grandparents married at the Cathedral? We simply believe that members of St. John’s have the right to be married in their sacramental home. However, if your church home is another parish, that is where you should be celebrating your  sacrament (some extenuating circumstances may permit a wedding at the Cathedral. If your Cathedral wedding request is granted due to special circumstances, please obtain the permission of your home pastor before doing scheduling the date).

Planning Your Wedding

1. Complete a Wedding Request Form. Questions about this form may be directed to the Event Coordinator at the Parish Office: 208-342-3511 x110 (Monday through Friday 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.) or email

2. Contact our Pastoral Associate at to initiate the planning process and to plan for a priest or deacon to help you with marriage preparation. Make an appointment to meet with a pastoral staff member (either a Pastoral Associate or Deacon). This appointment will review the process of getting married in our church and the initial down payment of $375 will be due to confirm your date and time. If you cancel your wedding for any reason the down payment is non-refundable.
