COREY | Cathedral Office for Religious Ed and Youth
Purpose and Aim
Religious Education at the Cathedral Parish of St. John the Evangelist strives to partner with its parish families in the catechetical formation of their children including sacramental preparation for First Reconciliation and First Communion for those children older than 7 years of age. In order for catechesis in the faith to take root in children so that the faith is practiced into adulthood, it is imperative that a strong home and parish connection exists with our Religious Education families.
Catechetical formation outside of the home can begin as early as 3 years of age with our Catechesis of the Good Shepherd Atrium. Catechesis of the Good Shepherd (CGS) is a Montessori-based faith formation program for 3 to 6-year olds. Children should be toilet trained by the start of the first day. Because this faith formation program has a limited number of spaces available, please e-mail Teresa Wittry at [email protected] if you wish to enroll your child in this program and you will receive a separate link for registration. For more information on this newest offering please visit the CGS national website www.cgsusa.org.
Go to the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd website to learn more about this program.
Sacramental Preparation is for baptized children who have reached the Age of Reason (typically age 7). These children will receive instruction and preparation for the Sacraments of Reconciliation and First Communion. This year we will be using the Dynamic Catholic Program Blessed.
To learn more about this program, please go to the Dynamic Catholic/Blessed website.
Sacramental Preparation is available on most Sundays (see RE Calendar for dates) at 11:15 am, or you may choose to participate in the Family Catechesis program two Tuesdays a month from 6 to 7:30 pm.
Partnering with families to ensure that middle school and high school aged youth continue their journey with Christ and His Church through prayerful faith formation and community service opportunities.

Preparation for the Sacrament of Confirmation is available to validly baptized students in 9th grade or higher. Registration for this Sacrament must be completed by October.
