First Reconciliation & First Holy Communion
2-Year Program In Grades 1 & 2
Welcome, registration for the upcoming 2022-23 RE year is soon to begin. Our First Communion Preparation program is now a two-year process through St. John the Evangelist Religious Education program. It will be a time for your child to grow in relationship with God in preparation for two sacraments: Reconciliation (confession) and First Communion. Our Sacramental Preparation program instructs parishioner children seeking First Reconciliation and First Communion instruction through our parish catechetical formation program.
Families must be parishioners of St. John the Evangelist for a minimum of six(6) months at the time of registration.
Once your child is 7 years of age and/or going into first grade at the time of registration, they will be eligible to begin our two year program in the Level One - First Grade program (no exceptions).
Children older than (7 +) years of age and entering second grade will begin Level Two - Second Grade program (with one exception). This year 2022-23, all second grade (7 + years of age) students are eligible for our second grade preparation class. Next year, students entering second grade (7 +) who have not attended Level - One class, will be placed in the Level - One class and will make their sacraments the following year (no exceptions).
Parents are expected to make a serious commitment to see that their children attend these scheduled sacramental preparation classes. If an unforeseen situation occurs and your child must miss a class, the parent is to email the Coordinator of Religious Education and communicate the absence. Since attendance is an indicator of readiness for receiving a sacrament, parents will be contacted by the Religious Education Coordinator when a child misses (2) classes and more during the year. In this case, an assessment will be necessary to determine if the child is ready to receive the sacraments.
NOTE: Sport practices, games, tourmanments, sleepovers, etc. will not be accepted reasons for missing a class. Just as those extracurricular activities are important and take commitment, so does our sacramental preparation program which is taught by volunteer-catechists.
We look forward to the journey alongside your children through our Religious Education program at St. John the Evangelist by partnering with parents in passing on and nurturing the faith.
For sacramental preparation: Please email a copy of your child’s Baptismal Certificate to [email protected] to fully register your child(ren). Failure to provide a copy of baptismal certificate will delay the full registration process by the deadline. If your child was baptized at the Cathedral, please copy your hard copy of the certificate and email to the above address.
The deadline for registration is October 1, 2022
