Sacrament of Matrimony
It’s great to hear that you are interested in getting married in the Catholic Church generally, and here at St. John’s Cathedral specifically! Let’s see what we can do to make this happen for you.
Just in case, if you didn’t know, to be married in the Catholic Church, at least one person needs to be a baptized Catholic and the hope is that both of you are in accord with wanting to be married per the Catholic vows. Below is an overview of what we have in place here at the Cathedral so you can plan accordingly and decide if it works for you to be wed here.
WHY. The presumption is that you are in love with each other, so the larger question is “what are you asking of God, His Church & each other?” In the case of marriage, the Catholic Church has one of the highest bars in the world, and as the graphic shows, it would be much easier to just get married civilly. This is not just the Church needlessly making it hard: it is because Christ himself raised the bar of marriage when he said: “let no man separate what God has joined together.” You are requesting the Sacrament of Matrimony, so what role do you see for God and His Church in your marriage? This is something to consider, and this question will be addressed in Matrimony prep that takes six months from the time of booking the date in step 6 (see our nine-step process HERE).
WEDDING GUIDELINES. Every Church has its guidelines for a wedding, and you can see ours HERE.
WHEN. Note for planning purposes, the scheduled day/time must be at least six months down the line (to allow for Matrimony preparation) from the day we confirm the date (and not just from this initial inquiry). To see potential available dates click HERE.
HOW. All Catholic Sacraments require patience and process, so DO NOT send out save-the-date cards just yet, because there are several steps that must be completed before we can confirm a Cathedral wedding day/time. To see our nine-step process HERE.
